ABOUT NEMAF

Nepal Madhesh Foundation (NEMAF) is an independent non-governmental organization, established in September of 2007. Its head office is located at Kupandole, Lalitpur and provincial office at Janakpur, Nepal.

NEMAF has been working at different level (Federal, Provincial and Local) with different stakeholders. Its major goal is to be part of journey of socially, politically and economically developed Madhesh/Terai.

NEMAF’s main approach of working is like bridge between state and society to enhance participative & inclusive democracy in Nepal. It has been working with public, political leaders, law makers and government officials at different level to bridge the gap between state and society.

NEMAF has been continuously doing research, dialogue, discussions, publications and required implementing activities. Its main objective is to strengthen civil society in grass root level for better quality of school education and governance at grass root level. It has been also working to enhance social harmony in Madhesh/Terai. In last 13 years, NEMAF did partnership with different national and international organizations to achieve its goals.

Our mission is to strengthen social harmony and to gradually eliminate all kinds of discrimination from Nepalese society. NEMAF is committed to create an unbiased, non-partisan and democratic forum, through which issues of peace and development can be researched and the results disseminated to all kinds of stakeholders involved in nation building.

NEMAF envisages the facilitation and creation of a suitable socio-political environment where upon Madheshi people can exercise their socio-cultural and economic rights for nation building guaranteed by the constitution with dignity.

Contribution to a socially, politically and economically developed and socially harmonized Madhesh by creating a critical mass of effective civil society in Madhesh.

OBJECTIVES

  • To conduct research on the evolving and emergent socio-economic and political dynamics in the Nepal, especially related to Terai/Madhesh.
  • To conduct field surveys and research on civil rights, needs and aspirations, and emerging socio-cultural, identity and issues of representation of Madheshi community with specific reference to Dalits, Janjatis, Women, and other deprived groups.
  • To conduct action oriented survey and research on natural resource, land holding patterns and possible reform measures, productive infrastructure and facilities, health and sanitation, poverty and environment, and socio-economic and human resource development opportunity in Terai/Madhesh districts
  • To disseminate findings facilitating a wider exchange of ideas through seminars, conferences, public forums, and informal discussions, and to publish findings, documents, policy relevant reports, and technological innovations benefiting the rural community
  • To undertake projects on promoting and supporting empowerment, social integration, and capacity and capability of women, Dalits, Janajati, Muslim, and other socio-economically deprived communities in Terai.
  • To develop and execute field program with local community participation for poverty reduction, gender and social inequity, malnutrition, health and sanitation problems, and environmental degradation in rural areas.
  • To implement programs aimed for productive rural infrastructures and facilities, income generation activities, and commercial agriculture initiatives in Terai.

Strategic Approaches

Local level strategic approach: Local stakeholders and the local community will be trained in different parts of the Madhesh/Terai to engage with the issues identified. They will be trained so that they can analyzed the facts and figures on their own and organize advocacy activities at the local level. This will help to develop a critical mass of civil society at local level.

Central level strategic approach: NEMAF’s work at the local level with its own staff or partner organizations and its own research activities will generate facts and figures for advocacy at the central level. Advocacy activities will be launched, preferably in alliance with like-minded organizations, by identifying specific methods, target groups and anticipated outputs. Advocacy activities will be followed up and advocacy outputs in particular will be closely monitored and documented for future references.

Institution main areas of the specialization:

Good Governance, Security and Social Harmony are the main areas of specialization. NEMAF promotes democracy by enhancing social harmony and inclusiveness and enhancing the security situation, governance and political and socio-economic conditions of people in the Madhesh through activities such as research, dialogues, lobby and advocacy visits as well as capacity building trainings. It also fosters collaboration with different likeminded organizations and institutions in Nepal for establishing sustainable peace and development.
